Memorandum to Federal Records Management Contacts: New Scheduling Guide for Scheduling Records With Intrinsic Value

We have issued a new scheduling guide explaining how to schedule records that have intrinsic value, Scheduling Guide 8: Scheduling Records With Intrinsic Value.

Records that have intrinsic value have one or more characteristics described in Appendix 3 of our Appraisal Policy. These records must be transferred to NARA in their original, analog format. NARA makes determinations regarding intrinsic value through the scheduling process.

Intrinsic value is rare, but is something agencies should consider prior to disposing of source records after digitization. GRS 4.5 specifically excludes source records that have intrinsic value.

Additional scheduling guides are available on our records scheduling guides webpage.
