En 1941, el Servicio de Parques Nacionales asignó al destacado fotógrafo Ansel Adams para que creara un mural fotográfico para el Departamento del Interior en Washington, DC. El tema debía  ser la naturaleza,  ejemplificada y protegida en los Parques Nacionales de EE. UU. El proyecto del mural se detuvo debido a la Segunda Guerra Mundial y nunca se reanudó, sin embargo, las fotografías permanecieron.

Mucho más tarde, en 1962, las fotografías se incorporaron a las existencias de la Rama de Imágenes Fijas de la Administración Nacional de Archivos y Registros. Las impresiones originales creadas para el proyecto ahora se encuentran dentro de la serie 79-AA: Fotografías de parques y monumentos nacionales de Ansel Adams, 1941-1942, mientras que los negativos fueron retenidos originalmente por Adams en ese momento. Ansel Adams visitaría más tarde la Rama de Imagenes Fijas y revisaría sus impresiones fotográficas en 1979.

Las fotografías de Kings Canyon se tomaron en 1936 cuando se proponía el establecimiento del parque. Adams agregó estas impresiones al proyecto del mural. La única fotografía de Yosemite (79-AAU-1) fue un regalo de Adams al jefe del Servicio de Parques, Horace Albright, en 1933.

Además, hay ocho fotografías tomadas por Adams de Yosemite en los Archivos Fotográficos Generales del Servicio de Parques Nacionales (79-G).
