Summer 2025 interns have the opportunity to work in a variety of fields, including archival processing, museum exhibits, and more. Interns work between 10-40 hours per week for 10 weeks. Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Interns’ primary task is to prepare documents for digitization. Details are as follows:
- Remove fasteners (staples, clips, etc.) and bindings
- Remove non-scannable items & materials (envelopes, boxes, bags, etc.)
- Identify and alert LP-GWB (Bush Presidential Library) staff of any non-scannable/textual items or materials (AV, electronic textual, artifact)
- Create preservation copies where needed

- Museum collections work is ongoing care and documentation of the artifacts. This internship will give the intern an understanding of what collections work entails.
- Groupings of artifacts will be assigned with specific tasks to be completed related to inventory, cataloging, processing, or photographing.
Work Environment:
- The intern will work with the museum collections staff in artifact processing and artifact storage.
- Artifact storage spaces are climate controlled and generally cool to cold.
- An intern will need to be able to climb ladders and carry heavy boxes.

Jimmy Carter – Atlanta, GA - Digitization Internship (Social Media)

Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Be trained on our photonegative and document digitization processes
- Advise on ideas for social media
- Be trained on how to use our photograph/photonegative scanners
- participate in composing social media posts for such initiatives as #CartersAcrossAmerica, #ArchivesHashtagParty, and #Carter50 (which will document the 50-year anniversaries of Carter's campaign and Presidency).
Professional Development Opportunities:
- The intern will be learning about the digitization and related decision-making processes at a Presidential Library, assisting in much-needed digitization of visual/photographic records in the Carter Library collection, learning about the preparation of social media posts in accordance with guidelines and laws surrounding posts made by federal agencies, and learning how to conduct research of the Carter Library collections for information on certain events.
- The intern is encouraged to keep a record of digital record metadata they completed and social media posts that they compiled.
Work Environment:
- The audiovisual room, which has the scanners required for the internship, will be where the above activities take place.
- The intern might also accompany the archivist in pulling the records being worked on from the collection storage bays.

- Works with Museum Store Manager on retail sales, store displays, and E-Store commerce.
- Works with Museum Educator on public outreach programs, summer camps, and program development.
- Works with Public Affairs Specialist on public-facing museum communications on social media, press releases, graphics, and special events.

- Volunteer interns at the Office of General Counsel will assist in providing litigation and administrative support to attorneys and archivists on the legal staff in a variety of ways, including but not limited to:

Tasks & Responsibilities:
- The intern will work with scientists in the Research and Testing Lab to screen materials for safe use around records.
- Use various types of analytical instrumentation and focus on efficient method development for testing by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry
Conduct a literature review of available methodologies for different sampling modalities, and deploy them for testing
Explore and create analysis protocols for Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry data
Contribute to the long term preservation of NARA holdings through the use of proper materials
- Use various types of analytical instrumentation and focus on efficient method development for testing by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry
Professional Development Opportunities:
- The participant will work with a team of scientists in an active research lab and will be exposed to a variety of types of analytical instrumentation to learn about their applications to preservation and conservation work at the archives.

Tasks & Responsibilities:
- During their time with the Education Department, interns will survey the many aspects of educational outreach to K-12 teachers and students, as well as young learners in the museum space. Interns can assist with:
- Development and deployment of educational activities including cart learning programs and sleepover stations in the museum
- Tours and activities for school groups
- Materials related to classroom resources and teacher professional development
Professional Development Opportunities:
- Through this work, interns will work with all education staff in the department and learn about the many avenues through which to approach museum education work.
- They will learn about adult and student learning styles, museum education, and how to use primary sources to create engaging activities for the public.
- They will produce deliverables for their portfolio including program scripts, educational resources, and promotional assets for upcoming programs.

- The participant will learn how NARA's mission dovetails with the needs of Congress. S/he will understand NARA's public offerings and gain insight into how Members of Congress engage NARA's records and other holdings. Processing Internship for the Textual Division

Tasks & Responsibilities:
- The internship offers an opportunity to perform a variety of tasks, including archival description and reference to improve accessibility of the records through the National Archives Catalog.
Interns will also play a key role in developing detailed finding aids that improve accessibility to the catalog, enabling researchers and the public to easily locate and utilize NARA’s records.
Professional Development Opportunities:
- During the internship, participants will acquire the skills necessary to evaluate the processing requirements of textual records, understand the methodologies employed to establish both physical and intellectual control over the records, and learn how to strategize and document processing procedures.
Furthermore, interns will apply these principles to a set of records, and will be tasked with creating a comprehensive processing work plan, finding aid, and catalog entries.
Additionally, interns may acquire hands-on experience in digitizing primary source material for the catalog and generating metadata.
