Fall 2024 interns will have the opportunity to work in a variety of fields, including archival processing, museum exhibits, and more. Internships are unpaid, but can be done for academic credit or volunteer hours. Interns work between 10-40 hours per week for 12 weeks.

Archival Internship

Tasks & Responsibilities: Interns’ primary task is to prepare documents for digitization. Details are as follows:
- Remove fasteners (staples, clips, etc.) and bindings
- Remove non-scannable items & materials (envelopes, boxes, bags, etc.)
- Identify & alert LP-BHO (Obama Presidential Library) staff of any non-scannable/textual items or materials (AV, electronic textual, artifact)
- Create Preservation Copies where needed

Work Environment: The work is mostly sedentary and performed while seated, yet interns must be physically able to perform the duties of this position. Digital Photography of 3D Objects Internship
1 internship available at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, GA
Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Intern will conduct photography of 3D objects in the museum collection to publish in eMuseum. Duties include setting up 3D objects for photographs, adjusting lighting, using Photoshop and Lightroom, tether shooting, and calibrating graphics monitors.
- Intern will identify objects to photograph, produce images for our online eMuseum following FADGI guidance, edit, and upload images to the TMS database, and link images in TMS records. Photographs may also be used in social media and on website.
Professional Development Opportunities:
- Intern will become skilled in 3D still photography and cultural heritage photography.
- Intern will create a portfolio of digital images to add to their professional portfolios. There is a large variety of objects to master from oversized objects to small objects and objects are made of a variety of materials from textiles to reflective objects.
Work Environment: Photography studio is located in a secure access space with strict temperature and humidity controls. Must be able to climb ladders and lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to endure moving and bending to set up object shots.

Social Media (Historical Collections) Internship
1 internship available at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, GA
Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Research archival, audio visual (AV), and 3D museum object holdings at the Carter Library for social media content. Identify relevant post material and write appropriate posts for Instagram, X, and Facebook, using best practices for both social media and cultural heritage organizations. Identify and create a log of related holdings (archival, AV, and museum objects) in the collection that can be accessed for future posts. Digitize internal documents as needed.
Professional Development Opportunities:
- The Social Media (Historical Collection) Intern will learn how to research NARA holdings by using internal databases and external catalogs. The intern will learn best practices for a cultural heritage organization and best practices for social media platforms while delivering educational material to the public. The intern will learn how to navigate The Museum System (TMS) and the NARA catalog to identify relevant material. The intern will learn plain-writing techniques and ADA guidelines in social media. The intern will create a digital portfolio of social media posts and images.
Work Environment: Work will be done primarily in an office setting with few physical demands. The intern will work independently and with colleagues as needed.

Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Interns will arrange and describe records, digitize records, and perform basic preservation tasks on records. The intern will also have some opportunities to help with reference as well.
Professional Development Opportunities:
- In addition to obtaining hands-on experience processing and digitizing 19th and 20th Century records, the intern will be able to observe how a small staff is able to manage over 130,000 cubic feet of records and answer thousands of reference requests in a timely manner. The intern will also be able to participate in all staff meetings and staff development programs that take place during their tour.
Work Environment: Most of the work will be sedentary nature, although the intern may need to assist with moving multiple 50 pound boxes related to assigned projects. The room where records are worked on is clean, but many of the records may be dirty.

Archival Internship at the National Archives at Denver

Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Carry out maintenance actions needed to preserve NARA's holdings and make them available for use.
- Apply the principles of archival arrangement and description to increase discoverability and access.
- Assist in internal digitization activities by conducting document preparation activities and digitizing records according to NARA policies, procedures and standards.
Professional Development Opportunities:
- Interns will learn about archival preservation practices, describing complex records for discoverability and digitization utilizing several different imaging solutions, including a high-speed scanner and a camera set-up. They will be encouraged to identify individual records or series of records to apply principles of enhanced description to as well as learning how to promote those records, and their work through NARA’s social media platforms.

Archival Internship at the National Archives at San Francisco

Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Assist with archival processing of records (including arrangement and description, rehousing and labeling, creating finding aids, etc.) and digitization of records (including imaging of records, creation of metadata, quality control, etc.).
- Opportunities to perform historical research, create social media or blog posts, and assist with the reference process may be available pending project selection.
Professional Development Opportunities:
- Gain hands-on experience with archival standards and best practices while working with engaging materials and learning from qualified professional staff.
- Get a behind-the-scenes look at the policies and procedures of the National Archives while contributing to the preservation of our national history.
- Expand and practice communication and problem-solving skills.

Digital Engagement (Metadata Standards) Internship for the Office of Innovation

The Digital Engagement Division in the Office of Innovation (VE) seeks an enthusiastic and motivated undergraduate or graduate student in archival administration, library science, information science, or information management to join our team as a Volunteer Intern. This internship offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on metadata standards experience to make access happen via the National Archives Catalog. The Digital Engagement Division includes three programs: standards and authorities, description (review), and technical.
Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Support metadata standards and authorities work as a member of the Digital Engagement Division team, which supports the National Archives Catalog, Description and Authority Services (DAS), and the Standards and Authorities Program
- Assist with development of updated training materials for NARA’s archival description metadata standards and authority files
- Research and benchmark metadata standards, including linked data, across the archival profession, nationally and internationally
- Analyze legacy finding aids and provide recommendations to transform their content into standards-compliant metadata for Catalog descriptions

- Create, update, & publish content on the Archives.gov website.
- Provide technical support and assistance to NARA staff with performing various web content management tasks.

- The intern will spend a significant amount of time in an office setting, working at a desk with a computer and other office equipment. This environment is usually professional and business-casual, with tasks such as document management, data entry, and meeting coordination.
- The intern will also frequently visit construction sites to observe progress, take notes, and assist in site inspections. These visits require wearing appropriate safety gear, such as hard hats, safety vests, and boots, and adhering to strict safety protocols.

Processing Internship for the Textual Division

Tasks & Responsibilities:
- The internship entails fundamental maintenance of archival holdings, and includes tasks such as rehousing textual records, verifying collection contents, and developing finding aids for the catalog. Additionally, interns will be involved in the Innovation Hub, where they will assist patrons with scanning records, ensure quality control, enter metadata, and perform Photoshop work to prepare images for the catalog.
Professional Development Opportunities:
- During the internship, participants will acquire the skills necessary to evaluate the processing requirements of textual records, learn the methodologies employed to establish both physical and intellectual control over the records, and learn how to strategize and document processing procedures. Furthermore, interns will apply these principles to a set of records and will be tasked with creating a comprehensive processing work plan, finding aid, and catalog entries. Additionally, interns will acquire hands-on experience in digitizing primary source material for the catalog and generating metadata.
Work Environment: Half of the tasks will be undertaken within the archives processing room, operating discreetly behind the scenes, while the remaining half will be performed within the Innovation Hub, a publicly accessible section of the archives. This may include some heavy lifting of up to 50 lbs.
