Photograph of a Young Woman at the Civil Rights March on Washington, DC, with a Banner, August 23, 1963

This photograph is of a young woman who participated in the August 23, 1963, “March on Washington For Jobs and Freedom.” The young woman was later identified as 12-year-old Edith Lee-Payne, who attended the March with her mother and was unaware of the photograph until 2008. This image is one of three of Edith taken by photographer Rowland Scherman for the United States Information Agency (USIA) and found within this series of photographs.
