USS Arizona Burning after Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941

On the morning of December 7, 1941, the battleship USS Arizona (BB-39) was moored in Pearl Harbor, HI, along with other ships of the Pacific fleet, when they were targeted in a surprise attack by Japanese military aircraft. The ship was hit by several bombs, sinking the ship and resulting in the deaths of 1,177 service members. A total of 2,341 people were killed, and over 1,000 other service personnel and civilians were wounded on December 7, 1941. The attack propelled the United States into World War II.
