Photograph of Flag Raising on Iwo Jima, February 23, 1945

Joe Rosenthal’s photograph of the flag raising on Mount Suribachi at the southern tip of the island of Iwo Jima, taken on February 23, 1945, is among the most recognized images from World War II. Rosenthal was working as a photographer for the Associated Press (AP) as a war correspondent in the Pacific. The photograph was awarded the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Photography, and served as the model for the United States Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, VA.
