The exhibition "Tokens and Treasures, Gifts to Twelve Presidents" was displayed in the Circular Gallery of the National Archives, March 22, 1996 through February 2, 1997.

This exhibit showcases over 200 gifts sent to Presidents Hoover through Clinton. The selection includes a remarkable range of objects, from opulent gifts from heads of state to handmade offerings from American citizens. A few of the pieces are by renowned artists such as Grandma Moses, Charles Russell, Elaine de Kooning, and Irving Berlin.

Although most of the artists represented are not well known, their works are no less striking. Often expertly crafted, these gifts are heartfelt expressions of admiration and affection for the President.

The collection brought together here has been selected from the holdings of the Presidential library museums and Presidential materials projects, which are administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. Photographer Joseph Bailey and the White House Historical Association contributed to the exhibit and catalog.
