Mount Pleasant Indian School Superintendent’s Diary

While student case files from the Mount Pleasant Indian Boarding Schools can tell a history of the individual students at the institution, the Superintendent’s diary, or the History of the Mount Pleasant Indian School, April 6,1892, to June 6, 1934, fills in the history regarding some of the important larger events at the Boarding School. This journal was kept by the different Superintendents of the school to occasionally record daily events. Large school events may not be recorded in an individual student file, but graduations, construction milestones, and celebrations are recorded. Handwritten stories on the severe weather and the effect on crops grown on the school grounds help tell a school-wide story that cannot be found in an individual student file. Ultimately, the closure of the school is documented in the diary, with inclusion of information concerning the sale of the property to the State of Michigan.
