138.1 ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY

Established: In the Department of Energy, effective October 1, 1977, by the Department of Energy Organization Act (91 Stat. 578), August 4, 1977.

Predecessor Agencies:

Federal Power Commission (1920-77)

Functions: Regulates the rates and charges for interstate transportation and sale of natural gas, transmission and sale of electricity, and transportation and sale of oil through pipelines. Sets the value of pipelines. Licenses hydroelectric power projects.

History: Established as an independent agency by the Federal Power Act (41 Stat. 1063), June 10, 1920, to regulate interstate aspects of electric power and natural gas industries. Terminated and functions transferred to the Department of Energy, 1977. SEE 138.1.
