Amelia Earhart's Distinguished Flying Cross Award Card
Below is the Distinguished Flying Cross award card for Amelia Earhart Putnam, civilian aviator, awarded by an act of Congress in 1932. The Distinguished Flying Cross is awarded to military pilots who distinguish themselves with an act of heroism while in flight. The award is reserved solely for military pilots, hence the significance of civilian pilot Amelia Earhart receiving the award. In 1932, Earhart solo piloted a nonstop transatlantic flight, which earned her the award below. She was the first woman to do so.
