Man Emerging from After Magazines via Turret #3, October 24, 1942

USS Arizona (4581:42)

After the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy was faced with the difficult task of recovering human remains, refloating ships, and removing waterlogged ammunition and equipment. The Salvage Division worked tirelessly for several years, eventually returning many of the damaged ships to service. USS Arizona remains one of the most striking and recognizable images from that day, and these photographs are representative of the salvage efforts that occurred on Arizona. Today, her sunken hull is memorialized as part of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial Site.
