Jiggs Community Watershed Map, Elko County, NV, 1956
Representative of our voluminous Bureau of Land Management (BLM) holdings, this narrative report and color-coded map discusses grazing in the area slightly to the east of the east central portion of the Northern Great Basin, and in the southwest quarter of Elko County, NV. It covers the history of grazing in the area, analyzes grazing conditions, and recommends improvements. Among the environmental issues it covers are the impact of the establishment of Humboldt National Forest, the instability of land ownership in lands formerly owned by railroads, and the benefits of fencing to control seasonal use of range. Although less visually appealing than some of our more well-known holdings, land records such as this document are vitally important in U.S—especially western U.S.—history.
