Chinese Exclusion Act Case File of Hom Gim Lin (Henry Quin), 1916-1924

This photograph was attached to the transcript of Leung Shee’s testimony in support of her son Henry Quin’s application to travel to Mexico for business and pleasure. Leung Shee and her husband Tom Ah Quin were prominent founders of early San Diego and well-respected pillars of the community

Leung Shee, also referred to as Mrs. Tom Ah Quin, was known as the “Princess” of the “Chinese Colony” in San Diego. She was the wife of Tom Ah Quin, the “Merchant Prince” of Chinatown. Born in China and moved to San Francisco, she relocated to San Diego after her marriage to Tom Ah Quin in 1881. She was the mother of 12 children: Annie, George, Mamie, Tom, Margaret, Lilly, Minnie, Franklin, Henry, Mary, Mable, and William McKinley – all born in San Diego, CA.

Our office holds Chinese Exclusion Act files created by the Calexico Substation, District 16 (Los Angeles), Port of Los Angeles, Nogales Substation, San Diego Substation, and San Pedro Substation offices of the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
