2024 Update for Reparative Description
In 2024, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) moved reparative description work from a temporary working group to incorporating reparative description into the regular description processes of the agency.
- We are incorporating reparative description training into the regular agency-wide training program for the staff who work on description.
- We developed and implemented processes for terms to be identified and recommendations for updating to be submitted by staff or the public for consideration.
- We developed the process for our standards board to review submissions and provide final recommendations for the Archivist.
- Final recommendations are documented in NARA’s publicly available Lifecycle Data Requirements Guide, which includes a list of preferred terms.
Total number of descriptions reviewed under NARA’s reparative description program: 13,549
Total number of descriptions revised: 2,284
Why aren't more descriptions revised? The outdated or potentially offensive term may actually be part of a person’s last name, organization name, or a place name.
