Some of the 100 purebred bucks purchased in 1943 grazing in summer buck pasture. There are now nearly 200 tribal bucks and 100 private bucks grazing in the pasture.
Upstream view of large dam constructed 4 miles NE of Agency in Keams Canyon. Picture taken 2 weeks after construction began. Rainstorm produced run-off backing water up 350 feet in channel.
View of large dam constructed in Keams Canyon constructed in 1943 with AAA funds. It is estimated by engineers that this dam will have a water storage capacity of 250 acre feet. The spillway, blasted out of solid rock, is at the far end of the dam. This dam will act as a good stock water and as a flood control dam.
View of Pollacca Dam looking toward spillway on far side. Facts about dam: Location 1 mile below junction of Wepo and Polacca washes. Size of dam - 34,847 cubic yards. Size of lake - backed up 1 3/4 miles, 40 surface acres and 500 acre feet of water impounded. Size of spreading area - 1000 to 1500 acres of rangeland with native grasses.
View taken from spillway looking toward water where two Hopis are swimming. Water ran over this spillway for approximately 21 days this summer increasing the volume growth of native grasses many times.
