Established: As an independent agency by an act of April 5, 1918 (40 Stat. 506). Functions: Provided support to war industries and banks that aided them, and assisted in the transition to peace. Financed government-controlled railroads and made loans to U.S. exporters. Made agricultural loans to financial institutions and cooperative marketing associations. Established agricultural loan agencies and cooperated with livestock loan companies.
Abolished: December 31, 1939, in accordance with Reorganization Plan No. II of 1939, effective July 1, 1939.
Successor Agencies: Secretary of the Treasury, named as liquidator by act of March 1, 1929 (45 Stat. 1442).
