Still Pictures Aerial Photography in Record Group 80: General Records of the Department of the Navy

 

Naval Air Station, Houma, Louisiana, 1943 - 1944 (80-HL)

Mounted black and white prints providing aerial views of the town of Houma, and aerial ground views of the air station and attendant activities. Blimps (the only aircraft shown in this series), including the USS Shenandoah and Akron, are shown in operation, moored in the hangars, and under repair. There are also aerial views of temporary housing and dry docks at Morgan City, Louisiana, and of Fort Livingston. Naval Station, Hitchcock, Texas, 1943 - 1944 (80-HT)

Mounted black and white prints documenting activities at Hitchcock Naval Air Station. The majority are of blimps taking off, maneuvering in and out of hangars and undergoing repair, but the series also contains three aerial shots of the station, several views of GB-2, R-50-5, and SNC-1 aircraft, aerographer's mates taking [meteorological] observations, and a plaque of Navy wings. Photographs Relating to Lambert Field, St. Louis, MO, 1943 - 1944 (80-LSM)

This series consist of prints documenting activities relating to Lambert Field Air Station, in St. Louis, Missouri. About one third are prints, the rest negatives. The majority of the images are of various types of naval aircraft, and old and new uniforms of the WAVES, WACS, Marines, and Army Nurses. Also included are aerial oblique views of Lambert Field, Medal of Honor Winner John Basilone, Admiral Chester Nimitz, the WAVES second birthday party, and the canine security force. Other images show sailors on liberty, enjoying a St. Louis Browns baseball game, an elephant ride at the zoo, art galleries, dancing, and other off-duty activities. The finding aid for the series is available in the Still Pictures Research Room.
