Record Group 77: Civil Works Project Files, 1928 - 1989

This series consists of records collected by the district office staff as a result of civil engineering projects. The series includes, but is not limited to, job estimates; foundation reports; correspondence with contractors; job specifications; contracts; progress reports; blueprints and construction drawings; field notebooks; data on concrete tests; photographs of project sites; geological data reports; river and harbor surveys; cost estimates; and inspection reports.

 

Record Group 77: Clark Hill Dam Project Files, 1929 - 1954

This series contains records related to the construction of the Clark Hill Dam on the Savannah River near Augusta, Georgia. Included in the series are construction logbooks, bills of material, storm reports, accident reports, daily construction reports, inspectors' reports, work data reports, aerial photographs, correspondence, seismic charts, invoices, bid abstracts, and work progress charts. There were several contracting companies involved with the dam's construction: Bateson-Stolte; Boyle Construction Company; W.T. Anderson; Cherokee Inc.; Atlantic Dredging; Michael Art Bronze Company; Allstates Inc.; Virginia Steel Company, Tennessee Coal, Iron, and Railroad Company; Chicago Bridge and Iron Company; Logan Diving and Salvage Company; Michael Baker, Jones Core Drilling; Locke Construction Company; and Hardway Contracting Company. Record Group 114: Aerial Photographs, 1937 - 1941

This series contains aerial photographs and field sheets from Lauderdale County, Tennessee.


Record Group 121: Project Photographs of Federal Buildings, 1903 - 1974

This series of photographs documents the construction, extension, and remodeling of government structures which provide government services. These photographs include post offices, agriculture laboratories, custom houses, federal office buildings, quarantine stations, and the Fort Knox, Kentucky, Bullion Depository. The finding aid for the series is available at NARA at Atlanta.

 

Record Group 142: Construction Progress Aerial Negatives, 1934 - 1973

This series contains aerial negatives which chronicle major stages of construction on Tennessee Valley Authority's projects.

 

Record Group 142: Historic Photographs, 1933 - 1980

This series contains photographs which chronicle the development and growth of the Tennessee Valley Authority. These photographs depict the construction of dams, housing projects, Tennessee Valley Authority employees, and promotional flyers. This series is fully digitized.

 

Record Group 142: Kodak Negative File, 1934 - 1976

The series consists of approximately 531,000 negatives which include the following scenes: power generation facilities; Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) buildings, both under construction and completed; agricultural projects; Civilian Conservation Corps Camps; steam plants; nuclear plants; TVA events, such as dedications at dams, water races, and celebrations; and natural disasters. In addition, the photos depict family homes, farms, and mills in TVA construction areas, and in some cases, include pictures of the families themselves. All families and their homes are identified by name. Also included are photos of towns, streets, churches, schools, courthouses and graveyards. The finding aid for the series is available at NARA at Atlanta. This series is partially digitized.

Record Group 142: Phosphate Development Works Records, 1951 - 1992

This series includes the original agreement between the Army and Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and correspondence documenting the Army Chemical Corps-TVA relationship; documentation on the chemical processes used at the plant; construction of the plant and safety measures needed and implemented; discussions of the feasibility for continued operation of the facility; plant operating manuals; and documentation on preliminary negotiations between the Army and TVA regarding "Herbicide Orange" production. In addition, the records contain conference agendas and minutes, project authorizations, working capital reports, and documentation of security classified operations relating to military and non-military defense planning and health hazards. Also included are photographs and negatives of the plant; color slides of aerial views of the plant and chemical process formulas; and color snapshot photographs of asbestos removal from the plant. The finding aid for the series is available at NARA at Atlanta.

 

Record Group 156: Assorted Records, 1941 - 1946

This series consists of office orders, photographs, and historical records of the Alabama Ordnance Works in Sylacauga, Alabama. The photographs depict aerial views of the installation as well as the construction projects.

 

Record Group 156: Records of the Volunteer Ordnance Works, 1942 - 1950

This series consists of historical records, personnel bulletins, memoranda, policies and procedures, meeting minutes, and program files of the Volunteer Ordnance Works in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The historical records include information related to several topics: construction and operation contracts, plant production and operation, administrative problems, and labor. These records also contain charts and graphs depicting production statistics, as well as aerial photographs of the installation.

 

Record Group 326: Photographs and Films, 1948 - 1983

This series consists of photographs, films, and video recordings. The series documents construction of the Clinch River Breeder Reactor, the Portsmouth, Ohio gaseous diffusion plant, particle accelerators, laboratories, isotope production facilities, the Bonus reactor in Puerto Rico, and the experimental gas cooled reactor. It includes aerial shots of the Oak Ridge facility and pictures of modifications to the Portsmouth gaseous diffusion plant.

 

Record Group 336: Photographs of Transportation Corps Activities, 1944 - 1945

This series contains photographs from various Transportation Corps installations throughout the southeast: Montgomery Holding and Reconsignment Point; Brookley Field in Mobile, Alabama; Jacksonville Rail Terminal; Atlanta Terminal Station; Central Station in Memphis, Tennessee. The photographs depict images of officers and enlisted personnel, train terminals, railcar maintenance and construction, aerial views of installations, warehouses, ship construction, and other transportation vehicles and equipment. Also included in this series is a historical report from December 1944 created by the Office of the District Transportation Officer in Jacksonville, Florida.
