File 1: Records Stored in a NARA Federal Records Center
(version 3.0 issued July 7, 2015)
- Federal agencies do not have to provide any documentation to NARA concerning storage facility standards if their records are stored in a NARA-operated records center. As part of NARA's information gathering regarding where and how Federal records are stored, Federal Records Officers may sometimes receive a mailing from NARA requesting the names and addresses of all facilities used by their agency to store Federal records that are operated by their agency; and/or operated by another Federal agency; and/or operated by a commercial vendor or private contractor. When responding to such mailings, if you use NARA records centers, note that fact. There is no need to specify which one(s).
- It is NARA's responsibility to ensure the facility meets the standards set in 36 CFR 1234.
NARA Compliance with the Standards
All NARA Federal Records Centers comply with the requirements in 36 CFR 1234 (formerly numbered 36 CFR 1228, subpart K).
