Metadata Requirements for Permanent Electronic Records
This web page is intended to assist agencies with meeting metadata requirements by making available a single resource that agencies can reference to ensure that metadata accompanying transfers of permanent electronic records comply with NARA requirements. NARA will update the web page as any new regulations or bulletins about metadata are issued or updated. The spreadsheet includes the following sources that outline metadata requirements:
- 36 CFR 1236 Subpart E - Digitizing Permanent Federal Records, Metadata Requirements
- 36 CFR 1236 Subpart F - Transfer Metadata
- 36 CFR 1237 - Audiovisual, Cartographic, and Related Records Management
- NARA Bulletin 2015-04 - Metadata Guidance for the Transfer of Permanent Electronic Records
- Electronic Record Archive (ERA) 2.0 Transfer Request Form (see ERA User Manual for instructions on filling out the form)
- Guidance to Federal Agencies on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena Records Collection

Note: NARA has made the Lifecycle Data Requirements Guide available on our website which describes elements that are created as part of the archival description portion of the records lifecycle. The framework applies to all descriptions of permanent archival materials written by NARA after the records have been accessioned into the holdings of the National Archives. Agencies do not need to comply with this guide.
