MEMORANDUM TO FEDERAL AGENCY CONTACTS: Success Criteria for Managing Permanent Electronic Records

I am pleased to announce the publication of the Criteria for Successfully Managing Permanent Electronic Records. This guidance supports the Managing Government Records Directive (M-12-18), which states that “By December 31, 2019, all permanent electronic records in Federal agencies will be managed electronically to the fullest extent possible for eventual transfer and accessioning by NARA in an electronic format.”

The guidance details what agencies should consider at a high-level when managing their permanent electronic records. It includes operational activities, which describe practical “how to” instructions for accomplishing key tasks agencies must carry out as they move towards managing all permanent electronic records in electronic format. The guidance also reinforces the value of NARA's Universal ERM Requirements and provides an ERM Maturity Model example question for agencies to preview how they will be measured.

Further details on this success criteria document will be provided at the upcoming BRIDG meeting on April 24th.

If there are any questions or concerns, please contact my office at PRMD@nara.gov.
