MEMORANDUM TO FEDERAL RECORDS OFFICERS: Release of Presidential Memorandum on Managing Government Records

The President has issued a directive to heads of Executive Departments and Agencies on Managing Government Records. This directive requires Federal agencies to provide a narrative evaluation of their records management program and to designate a senior agency official to supervise this response.

The Archivist of the United States has issued the attached memorandum to assist agencies in fulfilling these reporting requirements. This memorandum provides more information about Presidential directive and the due dates for the various actions. In addition, it briefly describes how this input will be used by NARA to produce the 21st century framework for managing government records required by Section 3 of the directive.

We ask that you distribute the memo the attached memorandum from the Archivist to your agency head, your CIO, and your General Counsel as each of them have role to play in carrying out the requirements of the Presidential Memorandum.
