Special Programs Highlight National Archives Records in July and August

Washington, DC…In July and August, the National Archives will feature programs highlighting records from its holdings. All programs are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted, and will be held in the National Archives Building in Washington, DC, which is fully accessible. Visitors to the programs in the Research Center should use the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance, between 7th and 9th Streets, NW. See directions.

Meet the Authors and Book Signing
Signing Their Lives Away: The Fame and Misfortune of the Men Who Signed the Declaration of Independence by Denise Kiernan and Joseph D’Agnese. The book is available at a discount from the Archives Shop (202-357-5271) before and during the event.

Introduction to Genealogy
Archives staff present a lecture on basic genealogical research in Federal records. This lecture is offered the first Wednesday of the month.

Declaration: The Nine Tumultuous Weeks When America Became Independent
In his book Declaration, author William Hogeland presents a vivid and thrilling account of the struggles that tipped the balance for independence in the weeks before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Hogeland portrays the principal actors in the drama—Sam Adams, John Adams Thomas Paine, and a fascinating cast of lesser-known street radicals—and provides an analysis of events and a portrayal of the men who made America free. A book signing will follow the program, and the book is available at a discount from the Archives Shop (202-357-5271) before and during the event.

Army Service in the Civil War: An Overview
Archives staff teach “beyond the basic” archival research skills for genealogists on the third Wednesday of the month. This presentation is an introduction to records relating to Army service in the Civil War.
