Archivist John Carlin Names Director of Museum Programs at the National Archives
College Park, MD. . . .Archivist of the United States John W. Carlin announced today the selection of Marvin Pinkert as the Director of Museum Programs at the National Archives and Records Administration. In this new position, Mr. Pinkert will direct the exhibitions and public outreach programs in the newly renovated National Archives Building, scheduled to be completed in 2003. Specifically, Mr. Pinkert will lead a multi-year project to develop a major permanent exhibition relating to the meaning and importance of the Charters of Freedom-the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights-which are on permanent display in the National Archives. He will also help raise private support for this exhibition and ancillary activities. Mr. Pinkert will join the National Archives on December 18.
In making the announcement, Mr. Carlin said, " I am delighted that Mr. Pinkert has agreed to head up our new initiative to expand and highlight our museum and educational programs. Mr. Pinkert brings to this new position twelve years of experience in the museum world. He has created permanent and temporary exhibitions, raised millions of dollars from the corporate community to garner support for projects, developed and analyzed marketing strategies, and he has also been responsible for educational outreach and Web development at major museums. I look forward to welcoming Mr. Pinkert to the National Archives at this critical juncture."
Mr. Pinkert is currently an independent consultant whose clients include the Discovery Channel, the Historical Society of Washington, DC, and the Capital Children's Museum. Prior to that, Mr. Pinkert was the Vice President of Programs at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. During his tenure at the Museum, he created and implemented a strategic plan that transformed the nation's largest hands-on science center, attracting more than $160 million in new investment to the institution. Mr. Pinkert has also served as the University Secretary at Long Island University, as Director of New Products for Quality Books, and as Assistant Director of Alumni Relations at Brandeis University. Mr. Pinkert received a Bachelor of Arts from Brandeis University, a Master of Arts from Yale University, and a Master of Management from the J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University.
Mr. Pinkert is a member of the American Association of Museums, the American Association for State and Local History and the Association of Science and Technology Centers.
