Monday, September 14. Slide Lecture and Booksigning, Titanic.
(Advance reservations are required. The public should call 202-208-6163 by September 10.)
John P. Eaton and Charles A. Haas, authors of "Titanic: Triumph and Tragedy," will show a pictorial record of Titanic’s brief existence. The only two historians to have dived down to the wreck, they will also discuss their recent return to the site of the Titanic in August, 1998.
The lecture is free. Lecture is at 7 P.M. Theater.

Thursday, September 24. Lecture and Booksigning: Foreign Affairs.

Christopher Patten, a former member of the House of Commons, was Governor of Hong Kong from 1992 until its return to China on June 30, 1997. Even as China prepared to take over, Patten struggled to establish democratic institutions in Hong Kong that might survive the handover. In his new book, "East and West: China, Power, and the Future of Asia," Patten gives us an intimate portrait of Asia, in all its diversity. He makes a vital argument for the common interest of Eastern and Western powers, resulting in a startling departure from the conventional wisdom about China, power, and the future of Asia. Wednesday, September 30. Design and Politics in Film.

Red Desert, 1964. In conjunction with Peter Brunette’s lecture (September 29 at 7 P.M.) we present Antonioni’s film which critics have hailed as a masterpiece of color cinematography and set design. The film depicts the difficulty of a neurotic young wife and mother (Monica Vitti), living in the modern industrial world. Richard Harris plays the man who tries to help her cope. In Italian with English subtitles. Parental guidance suggested. (116 minutes.) 7 P.M. Theater.

La Notte, 1961. Marcello Mastroianni and Jeanne Moreau play husband and wife--he's also a famous novelist--in director Michelangelo Antonioni's masterful study of modern relationships and the intellectual's place in the Italy of the postwar economic boom. Parental guidance suggested. (121 minutes.) 8 P.M. Theater.
