National Archives Releases Additional Materials from the JFK Assassination Records Collection
At 8:45 A.M. on Tuesday, May 3, 1994, the National Archives in College Park, Maryland will make available to the public additional materials relating to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This opening is pursuant to the John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992 that established the Collection which consists of assassination-related records of the Federal government.
The following materials will be opened:
- FBI Headquarters investigative files of President Kennedy's death from 11/22/63 to 8/30/68;
- FBI Dallas Field Office files relating to Lee Harvey Oswald from 1/11/61 to 1/14/77;
- Additional FBI Field Office files regarding "related subjects," including Marina Oswald;
- FBI Mexico City Field Office files relating to Lee Harvey Oswald from 10/16/63 to 11/6/78;
- FBI New Orleans Field Office files relating to Lee Harvey Oswald from 8/26/63 to 5/12/78;
- Additional records of the Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities (Church Committee);
- Attorney FOIA Appeal Files of the Department of Justice Concerning FOIA Litigation Relating to Assassination Records.
The newly released records will be available in Lecture Rooms D and E at the National Archives at College Park, MD (Archives II) on Tuesday only. (Prerequested materials will be available after 5 P.M. on Tuesday, May 3 in the Cartographic Research Room.) After Tuesday, the Collection will be available in the Cartographic Research Room. (PLEASE NOTE: As of September 1994, these records are available in the Textual Research Room of the National Archives at College Park, MD.)
Research Room hours are: Monday and Wednesday 8:45 A.M. - 5 P.M.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8:45 A.M. - 9 P.M.; Saturday 8:45 A.M. - 4:45 P.M. Research cards are required. Personal property, i.e. notebooks, briefcases, purses or fountain pens are not allowed in the research room. Lockers are available. Debit cards may be purchased for the photocopying machines.
DIRECTIONS: Archives II is located at 8601 Adelphi Road.
BY CAR the new facility is approximately 40 minutes from downtown Washington, DC. Take North Capitol Street north, turn right onto Michigan Avenue, (Michigan Avenue becomes Queens Chapel Road in Maryland), continue to East West Highway, turn left on Adelphi Road and follow it to the Archives II entrance on the right. Parking is available.
BY SHUTTLE from the National Archives in Washington, DC board the bus on 7th Street between Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues. The shuttle leaves on the hour from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M., returning to the downtown building from Archives II on the hour. Researchers may use the shuttle on a space available basis with National Archives staff members receiving priority boarding.
BY METRO take the Green Line to the Prince Georges Plaza station. A National Archives shuttle bus departs from the Metro hourly, every 15 minutes after the hour.
