Lees Resignation
Resigning their commissions
Hundreds of officers serving with the United States Army, Navy, and Marine Corps resigned their commissions as their states, or adopted states, seceded. These men wrote to the Secretary of War or Navy, their commanders, the Adjutant General, or the President to resign. Sometimes their resignations came after their acceptance of commissions in the Confederate States Army or the armies of their states.
