Ronald Reagan Centennial Events in Washington, DC

Reagan Centennial Display at the National Archives in Washington, DC:

Throughout 2011:   Visitors now have a glimpse at rarely-seen historical artifacts and original documents that showcase the life and times of President Ronald Reagan. The display will rotate throughout the year and explore selected themes from Reagan's presidency. The historic documents and artifacts on display are on loan from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, one of 13 Presidential Libraries operated by NARA.

"A Week in the White House" (July 6-October 5, 2011):   The third installment of the special display will explore the breadth of official life in the White House. Visitors will see a range materials including an original White House calendar showing the weekly schedule of President Reagan, a state dinner menu, speech cards, and other special materials relating to the various meetings and events of President and Mrs. Reagan.

"Reagan and the West" (April 6, 2011-July 5, 2011):   The second rotation of the display will feature a rare glimpse at materials relating to President Reagan and the West. Highlights of the exhibit include western wear given to President Reagan; an original script from a Western movie Reagan starred in; and Ronald Reagan's personal White House diary, recording his thoughts as he was visiting Rancho del Cielo, his ranch in California. The diary is rarely shown, and is on special loan from The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation.

"Reagan and Foreign Relations" (January 7, 2011-April 5, 2011):   Visitors to the National Archives in early 2011 will see featured documents and materials related to Reagan's foreign relations policies including the struggle versus the Soviet Union. The display will include fascinating materials such Reagan's "Evil Empire" speech with the president's hand-written edits, and a scale model of the Moscow Kremlin.

Family programs at Archives I

June 17-June 20 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.:   As part of the year-long Ronald Reagan Centennial celebration, one of President Reagan's personal diaries will be on display until July 5, 2011. "Your Day as President" will provide materials for visitors to imagine a day in the White House by creating a personalized diary entry to be shared with Former First Lady Nancy Reagan. Select "Your Day as President" entries will be featured on the Archives News Photostream on Flickr and participants will receive a discount on all personal diaries available in the Archives Shop during the event. February 22 at noon:   Visitors to the National Archives building will be treated to a special film program, From the Vaults: Ronald Reagan and the Government Film. NARA will present a selection of film clips from the motion picture holdings of the National Archives, including films Reagan contributed to while serving with the Army Air Force during WWII, and scenes from his presidency (70 minutes).

February 18 at 1:00 p.m:   The National Archives in D.C. will celebrate the birth of President Reagan with a special birthday cake-cutting ceremony. Visitors to the public vaults will enjoy cake, featured photographs from our holdings, and a jelly bean bar featuring an array of President Reagan’s favorite treat.

Grand Re-opening of Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum

February 7:   Visitors will experience an all-new permanent exhibit with over 26,000 square feet of new space and interactive exhibits. Funded by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, the new space will give visitors an opportunity to role-play as they deliver a Presidential inaugural address, ride along with President Reagan on horseback, and “appear” with Ronald Reagan in a Hollywood movie.

Summer Teacher Institutes

July 2011:   The Presidential Library system, in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin, will host two Presidential Timeline Summer Teacher Institutes at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in July 2011. The Institutes will present recent scholarship on the Cold War, pedagogy concerning historical thinking and instruction on using technology in the social studies classroom.
