William Wirt (1772 –1834) was an American author and statesman who is credited with turning the position of United States Attorney General into one of influence (1817-29).  This microfilm edition of his papers is primarily the personal correspondence (1786–1850). Especially valuable is the detailed portrait of court and government life of the 1820s.
