A comprehensive edition of the papers of Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant) (1822 –1885), the 18th President of the United States (1869–1877) following his highly successful role as Commanding General of the U.S. Armies in the Civil War, defeating Robert E. Lee's army at Appomattox. As president he worked with the Radical Republicans on Reconstruction and protecting civil rights. The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant project was at Ohio State University, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and finally at Mississippi State University. These volumes contain thousands of letters written by Ulysses S. Grant (1837-1885), and to him; his military and presidential documents; and a small number of photographs.
