Richard Achilles Ballinger was mayor of Seattle (1904-1906) before joining the administration of President Theodore Roosevelt. Correspondence, clippings, scrapbooks, speeches, and other papers documenting Ballinger’s career as Commissioner of the U.S. General Land Office (1907–09) and as Secretary of the Interior (1909–11). Documents the Ballinger-Pinchot controversy which resulted in a congressional investigation of the Interior Department and the Forestry Service in 1910. Items in the collection relating to his business affairs (1915–20) were not microfilmed.
