Peter Buell Porter (1773 –1844) represented New York in the U.S. House of Representatives (1809-1813), a major general in the War of 1812, and Secretary of War from 1828-1829. The bulk of the papers (1810-1844) pertain to his career. Also included are the papers of Porter’s grandson, Peter A. Porter, who served one term (1907–9) in the House of Representatives.
