The Voting Rights Act of 1965, August 6, 1965
By July 1965 each chamber of Congress had passed its own voting rights bill. The two bills were merged in a conference committee as S. 1564. The House passed the bill on August 3, 328-74. The Senate agreed to the amendments the next day, 79-18. President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law on August 6.
