FRC 01.2018 Update on Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) program

October 2, 2017

To: Our Valued Customers:

Established by Executive Order 13556, the Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) program standardizes the way the Executive branch handles unclassified information that requires safeguarding or dissemination controls pursuant to and consistent with law, regulations and Government-wide policies.

The NARA's Federal Records Centers always had the capability to store your CUI (Basic) records in all of our record centers. Effective immediately, we now have the capability to store your CUI (Specified) records in our San Bruno, CA, Kansas City, MO and Suitland, MD FRCs.

CUI is information the Government creates or possesses for or on behalf of the Government, that a law, regulation, or Government-wide policy requires or permits an agency to handle using safeguarding or dissemination controls pursuant to and consistent with applicable law, regulations, and government-wide policies but is not classified under Executive Order 13526 or the Atomic Energy Act, as amended.

Your NARA account manager will contact you to discuss your needs on CUI records and any specific handling controls required so NARA can determine where the records can be stored.

We appreciate your continued support of NARA's Federal Records Centers Program, and we look forward to continuing our relationship as we build on our shared commitment to Federal records management.

Sincerely,

DAVID M. WEINBERG
Director, Federal Records Centers Program
