Meatpackers faced extremely hazardous working conditions. Animal parts splattered over workers and blood on the killing floor made it easy to slip. Workers lost fingers, hands, and arms to cutting and grinding machinery. Meatpacking was also unsanitary. Plants processed diseased animals and were often rodent infested.
