Winter Count of Good Voice Hawk, 1822-1912

This document is a page from a transcribed winter count history given in 1912 by Yanktonai Sioux (Dakota) historian Good Voice Hawk, through interpreter Ben Harrison. The history is a chronicle of the events of each year between 1822 and 1912. Winter counts were normally painted on hides or cloth. The keeper would paint a picture to represent the significant event of each winter. Oftentimes the job of keeping the winter count was passed down from father to son in the same family.

Our office holds correspondence, reports, and photographs documenting the history of the relationship between the U.S. Government and tribal nations in Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.
