Smokey the Bear Nature Stories, No. 1214, August 1961

This comic is one of several “Smokey the Bear Nature Stories” held by the National Archives at Denver. Published in the late 1950s and early 1960s, this series of comics followed the iconic American character's adventures to prevent forest fires and conserve his forest home.

Smokey Bear was brought to the National Zoo in Washington, DC, by the U.S. Forest Service in 1950 after being burned in a forest fire in the Lincoln National Forest in New Mexico. Smokey Bear served as a living symbol of the Smokey Bear forest fire prevention program.

Our office holds the records of the U.S. Forest Service’s many National Forests and Grasslands in Colorado, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico.
