Film Screening and Discussion - The Black Press: Soldiers without Swords
National Archives at Kansas City
Kansas City, MO
In this award-winning PBS documentary, archival footage and photographs are skillfully juxtaposed with interviews with editors, photographers, and reporters from African-American newspapers, who toiled on the front lines to give voice to a culture disenfranchised by white media. It recounts the largely forgotten stories of generations of Black journalists who risked life and livelihood so African Americans could represent themselves in their own words and images. This film is produced and directed by Stanley Nelson, Jr. Reservations are requested for this free program. A free light reception precedes the program at 6:00 p.m. This film series is presented in collaboration with the American Jazz Museum and the Greater KC Black History Study Group.
