Online Public Access
We’re all in a hurry. Typos and misspellings don’t slow you down too much when you use Google, because Google will ask, “Did you mean ...?” NARA’s legacy systems would often just return zero search results, which could be frustrating.
What about Online Public Access? The new system includes misspelling lookups and allows us to add customized misspellings to the lookup file for the search engine. In plain language, that means the system will be able to say, “Did you mean...?” and in some cases even guess what you meant to type. So even if you misspell Dorothea Lange’s name, you can find her photos in the new catalog. This means better access!
