| ATTITUDE = | The organization of the listings of USIA attitude surveys follows the coding scheme and subject classification established by the USIA and used as part of their numeric identification for each datafile. Their subcategories are not exclusive. For example, "surveys of foreign perception of international strength and security" may also include questions regarding economic issues; likewise, the category "international economic issues" includes many surveys with questions on international political issues, etc. |

Users may need to convert these copies to a contemporary format. NIPS documentation from 1971, 1973 and 1978 is available (9 vols., 1978). Vol. 1 (intro to file concepts) is 155 pp; the general description is 40pp. |

| RM = | Raw "multi-punched" data. Some USIA datasets include records in which there are "X" or "Y" (or "+" or "-") codes. This kind of multi-punched data will have an "RM" in the status field. However some USIA datafiles have records in which more than one variable is stored in the same character position. In most cases, datasets with this kind of "RM" data also have an "NA" in the status field. |

| VA = | File was transferred from punch cards to tape by the Veteran's Administration (R.G. 015) for a study of former prisoners of war (1980). |
| WW2 = | The electronic records on World War II prisoners of war originated as War Department card records. They were transferred to the National Archives in 1957. The punchcards remain in the textual archives of the National Archives. The electronic copies were made in 1998, with the exception of the two files that the Department of Veterans affairs prepared in the late 1970's. Those two files have "VA" in the status column (see above). |
