The Provost Marshall's Office was established by Congress in 1863 and abolished in 1866.
Besides the central office, state offices were established for each state, and district offices for each
Congressional district. They were responsible for drafting men into the armed forces and for
detecting and arresting deserters. Therefore, the records are described in several volumes as
follows: No. 65: records of Central Office, office subdivisions, & Mustering & Disbursement
Office; No. 67: New England; No.71: NY; No. 73: NJ & PA; No. 76: Del, MD, DC, WV, KY,
MO; No. 80: OH & Ind; No. 82: IL, Mich, Wisc, IO; No. 83: KS, Neb, Col. Dakotas, Minn,
CA, OR, Nev, Wash, Ark & Tenn.
