Most Blessed of the Patriarchs: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination

Co-authors Annette Gordon-Reed and Peter Onuf will discuss their new book, Most Blessed of the Patriarchs: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination at the National Archives on Thursday, May 19, 2015, at 7 p.m. The program is free and open to the public, reserve your seat online or click to watch a live stream on the National Archives YouTube channel.

Most Blessed of the Patriarchs: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination
Thomas Jefferson’s actions and ideas—more than any other Founding Father’s—still divide Americans two centuries later. Two distinguished scholars present an analysis of Jefferson seeking to expand our understanding of him in light of prevailing attitudes towards politics, slavery, genetics, and gender. Annette Gordon-Reed, Pulitzer and National Book Award-winner (for The Hemingses of Monticello) and Peter S. Onuf, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Professor of History, Emeritus, at the University of Virginia, will provide new insights into Jefferson’s views on Christianity, slavery, race and philosophy, as well as intimate, narrative stories of the patriarch in repose. A book signing will follow the program.

The program will be held in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Museum. The National Archives Building is located at Constitution Ave. and 7th Street, NW. Metro accessible on the Yellow and Green lines, Archives/Navy Memorial/Penn Quarter station. Attendees should enter through the Special Events entrance on 7th and Constitution Ave, NW.
