Special Programs Highlight National Archives Records in May

In May, the National Archives will feature programs highlighting records from its holdings. All programs are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted, and will be held in the National Archives Building in Washington, DC. Please note that three of the programs will be repeated at the National Archives at College Park, Maryland, in Lecture Room B.

Visitors to all programs in the National Archives Building Research Center (Room G-24) should use the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance, between 7th and 9th Streets, NW. Visitors to programs in the Adams and Jefferson Rooms of the National Archives Building should use the Special Events Entrance on Constitution Avenue at 7th Street. The National Archives at College Park, MD, is located at 8601 Adelphi Road. See directions to both locations.

World War II Records on Footnote.com
In recognition of the 65th anniversary of V-E Day, Laura Prescott from Footnote.com will explore the World War II documents and photos now available online through the National Archives’ partnership with Footnote.com. (The lecture repeats at the National Archives at College Park, MD, in Lecture Room B, Thursday, May 6, at 11 a.m.)

Introduction to Genealogy
Archives staff present a lecture on basic genealogical research in Federal records. This lecture occurs the first Wednesday of each month.

Declassified Records Process: Then and Now
Neil Carmichael, supervisory archivist with the National Declassification Center, covers a classified national security information life cycle—using the Berlin Crisis of 1961—within the executive branch of the Federal government. He will compare the advantages of the new National Declassification Center in assisting in the declassification process. Beyond the Basics on Finding Aids
Archives staff  present a special hour-and-a-half “beyond the basics” genealogy research skills lecture on how to use National Archives finding aids.

“Help! I’m Stuck”
Not sure where to begin? Has a genealogical problem stumped you? Would you like to explore new directions in your research? On the third Saturday of the month, an archivist is available from noon to 4 p.m. to answer questions. Look for the “Help! I’m Stuck” sign at the Research Center desk.

From the Records Book Group Pre-Program
Prior to the From the Records Book Group discussion on Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer by James L. Swanson, we will have a related presentation on the book’s topic. Please bring your own refreshments to enjoy.

Following the related presentation, the From the Records Book Group discusses Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer by James L. Swanson. Please check the Archives Shop (202-357-5271) for book availability and a special discount for book group participants.

Archives staff teach “beyond the basics” archival research skills on the third Wednesday of the month. This month’s topic of interest will be 1880 to 1930 Federal Census Schedules.

Ancestry.com and Records Relating to Memorial Day
Sabrina Petersen of Ancestry.com discusses how to access National Archives records through Ancestry.com. In recognition of Memorial Day, the talk will focus on records relating to veterans who died in combat. Archives Library Information Center “Walkabout”
Learn how the Archives Library Information Center (ALIC) can enhance your research with print and online materials during a “walkabout” with the Chief Librarian. Whether you are just beginning or an experienced researcher, this is the place to learn more about your topic. All are welcome to join us in the Library for this one-hour interactive tour.

Both Archives facilities are fully accessible.
