National Archives to Host Public Interest Declassification Board meeting 9-9-06

WHAT: The sixth meeting of the Public Interest Declassification Board to discuss declassification program issues. The meeting will include briefings by the Department of State officials from the Office of the Historian and the Advisory Committee on Historical Documentation.

WHO: Speakers will include:

  • Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein
  • Information Security and Oversight Office (ISOO) Director J. William Leonard
  • PIDB Chair L. Britt Snider
  • Deputy Assistant Secretary for Information Sharing Services Lee Loman
  • State Department Deputy Historian David Herschler
  • General Editor of the Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) series, Edward Keefer

This meeting is open to the public. However, due to space limitations and access procedures, the name and telephone number of individuals planning to attend must be submitted to the Information Security Oversight Office (ISOO). Information may be submitted electronically to PIDB@nara.gov or by telephone to 202-357-5308 no later than Thursday, September 7, 2006. ISOO will provide additional instructions for gaining access to the location of the meeting.

Background
The Public Interest Declassification Board is an advisory committee established by Congress in order to promote the fullest possible public access to a thorough, accurate, and reliable documentary record of significant U.S. national security decisions and activities. The Board is composed of nine individuals, five appointed by the President and four by the Congressional leadership. In addition to Mr. Snider, the President appointed Martin Faga, Steven Garfinkel, Elizabeth Rindskopf Parker, and Richard Norton Smith. The Minority Leader of the House appointed David Skaggs and the Majority Leader of the Senate appointed Joan Vail Grimson and on June 6, 2006, the Speaker of the House appointed Admiral William O.
