The National Archives at New York City is pleased to offer free visits for college and university classes. Whether undergraduate or graduate students, the National Archives at New York City is available to share the rich primary sources it holds that tell our American story. Visiting the National Archives at New York City is a beneficial component of to students of history, political science, education and archival programs.

Introduction to the National Archives

Length: 90 minutes (minimum) to 120 minutes

Short Description: In the Introduction to the National Archives program, participants learn about the National Archives through a hands-on analysis of our materials. This workshop provides instruction on how to conduct research in an archive, as well as what sort of information is found in various Federal records and how to access that information. Participants will also have the opportunity to analyze and interpret a variety of National Archives primary sources related to a topic of your choice. This customized workshop is designed to fit a variety of topic areas.

Participants in this research experience receive a behind-the-scenes tour of our facility and get to view original records of the National Archives.

Note: The Introduction to the National Archives college/university visit can be customized to explore a diverse variety of primary source documents from the National Archives. Contact us to find out more details
