  5. Why should you consider participating in NARA's Certification of Federal Records Management Training Program?
    • NARA's program will give Federal records professionals a set of benchmarks to gauge their professional development.
    • Our program is tied to a completion of a suite of classes that provide the knowledge and skills needed to be able to manage Federal records.
    • Our curriculum map of training courses serves as a set of competencies for an individual's development plan to acquire the skills necessary to manage Federal records.

  6. Which courses are included in NARA's optional Certification of Federal Records Management Training Program?

    Participants may take examinations upon completion of:

    Those who successfully pass all five examinations will receive "NARA's Certification of Federal Records Management Training," signed by the Archivist of the United States.

  7. How will the course examinations be conducted?
    • Completion of these examinations and participation in NARA's Certification of Federal Records Management Training Program is voluntary.
    • After completing each knowledge area course, you may elect to take an examination to demonstrate both understanding and the ability to apply the knowledge learned.
    • Examinations will be taken online via the RM Learn Center.

  8. How long will it take to get certified?

    Courses comprise nine days of training. You could complete all courses in less than a year. NARA has scheduled courses throughout the year in multiple locations. Choose the location near you.

  9. How will NARA's Certification of Federal Records Management Training Program differ from or compete with other RM certification programs?
    NARA's certification of Federal Records Management Training deals with Federal records Management policies and procedures. It is not intended to replicate any existing records management certification program. Our program is tied to a completion of a suite of classes which provide the competencies and skills needed to be able to manage Federal records.

  10. What about contractors?
    We suggest that agencies consider hiring contractors who have completed the classes.

  11. Will agencies need to take courses over when new policies come out?
    Not necessarily, new policies will be distributed to agencies as they always are. We have a review cycle of the core curriculum on an annual basis to keep our curriculum up to date.
