Hatfield Receives 1996 NHPRC Distinguished Service Award

Senator Mark O. Hatfield is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission for 1996.

The Commission chose to honor Senator Hatfield, in the words of the award, "for his lifelong, numerous, and distinguished contributions to American history as a university teacher, an accomplished author, a two-term member of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, and a devoted advocate within the United States Senate for the national archival and cultural institutions on whose collections the study, understanding, and appreciation of American democracy depends."

Gerald George, NHPRC's Executive Director, presented the award at a banquet in the rotunda of the National Archives and Records Administration attended by numerous senators and other dignitaries. The award was part of a program - "A Salute to Mark Hatfield" - honoring the Oregon senator on the occasion of his retirement. He plans to leave the Senate at the end of the current Congressional session.
