What are the goals of the NARA's Certification of Federal Records Management Training Program?
To improve effectiveness of Federal records management
To give NARA the ability to better assess the effectiveness of its training program
To raise awareness of the importance of records management in the Federal Government
To increase the level of professionalism of those managing Federal records
To give NARA and Federal records professionals a set of benchmarks to gauge their professional development
Why should you consider participating in NARA's Certification of Federal Records Management Training Program?
NARA's program will give Federal records professionals a set of benchmarks to gauge their professional development. Our program is tied to a completion of a suite of classes which provide the knowledge and skills needed to be able to manage Federal records. Our curriculum map of training courses serves as a set of competencies for an individual's development plan to acquire the skills necessary to manage Federal records.
Which courses are included in NARA's optional Certification of Federal Records Management Training Program?
Participants may take examinations upon completion of:
Knowledge Area 2 - Creating and Maintaining Agency Business Information
Knowledge Area 3 - Records Scheduling
Knowledge Area 4 - Records Schedule Implementation
Knowledge Area 5 - Asset and Risk Management
Knowledge Area 6 - Records Management and Program Development
Those who successfully pass all five examinations will receive "NARA's Certification of Federal Records Management Training," signed by the Archivist of the United States.
See NARA's web site for a listing of course offerings:

How will the course examinations be conducted?
All participants attending these courses will be emailed examinations. Completion of these examinations and participation in NARA's Certification of Federal Records Management Training Program is strictly voluntary. After completing each knowledge area course, you may elect to take an examination to demonstrate both understanding and the ability to apply the knowledge learned. Procedures for completing the examination will be provided in an email to the participant after the class. Online testing will begin in 2005.
How long will it take to get certified?
NARA has scheduled courses throughout the year in multiple locations. All NARA regions will offer all courses. Depending upon your training funds, travel funds and scheduling, you could complete all courses in less than a year. Courses comprise of nine days of training.
How will NARA's Certification of Federal Records Management Training Program differ from or compete with other RM certification programs?
NARA's certification of Federal Records Management Training will deal with Federal records Management policies and procedures. It is not intended to replicate any existing records management certification program. Our program is tied to a completion of a suite of classes which provide the competencies and skills needed to be able to manage Federal records. Our training program serves as a set of competencies that records management professionals may accomplish as a part of an individual development plan which will provide skills needed to manage Federal records.
What about contractors?
We can suggest to agencies to look to hiring contractors who have completed the classes. We do not endorse any contractors. We are certifying that individuals have taken the classes and passed the tests which should give them the core knowledge to manage Federal records.
Will agencies need to take courses over when new policies come out?
Not necessarily, new policies will be distributed to agencies as they always are. We have a review cycle of the core curriculum on an annual basis to keep our curriculum up to date with new policies.
Where do we submit our request for tailored training? Web training, briefings?
Agencies should send an e-mail to
David.Weber@nara.gov or talk with him at 215-305-2004.
We will always work with agencies but we will need to prioritize requests and balance these requests with our workload schedule.
