About the Federal Records Center

Since 1934, the National Archives has provided comprehensive records management support and archival guidance and services to the Federal Government. Since the opening of the National Archives and Records Administration's first records center in 1950, NARA has developed its records center system into a national network of fifteen facilities storing, and providing access to 21 million boxes of records .

The Mid Atlantic Region's Federal Records Center is an essential component of NARA's services the federal government. We are dedicated to providing superior records storage, access, and disposition services. This integrated approach yields great benefits to you, the customer, as NARA is an active participant from the creation of your records through their final disposition. The program is administered by a professional staff that is familiar with your program, your records, and your records management needs.

We maintain approximately 1.6 million cubic feet of retired records temporarily transferred from Federal agencies located in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, and provide other related services such as courtesy storage for Members of Congress from all districts. All Federal Agency records maintained at the facility are governed by the Code of Federal Regulations. Access to all records at the facility is controlled by the agency of origin.

Agency records stay in the facility, where they are tracked through an automated database, until they are either destroyed through recycling or accepted by NARA as permanent records. All Federal agency records management and interaction with the facility is governed by the Code of Federal Regulations as it relates to records management. Access to all records stored at the facility is controlled by the agency of origin.
